Whooping cough cases are surging across Europe, with numbers reaching unprecedented levels. The first quarter of 2024 alone witnessed a tenfold increase compared to the past two years. Great news for women's health! The US Preventive Services Task Force now advises that women begin breast cancer screening every other year starting at age 40, to significantly decrease the risk of dying from the disease. Here in the UK, NHS guidelines recommend starting breast screening at 50, with women over 70 welcome to self-refer. Today, as we mark World Ovarian Cancer Awareness Day, we unite to highlight a condition that impacts thousands of women in the UK and globally. Ovarian cancer begins in the ovaries or fallopian tubes and is notorious for being hard to detect in its early stages due to subtle symptoms. It is the sixth most common cancer among women in the UK and about 1 in 56 women will develop ovarian cancer in their lifetime. Symptoms to Watch For: Early detection is challenging, but awareness of symptoms can make a difference. Seek medical advice if you experience: - A swollen tummy or feeling bloated - Pain or tenderness in your tummy or the area between the hips (pelvis) - No appetite or feeling full quickly after eating - An urgent need to pee or needing to pee more often Risk Factors: Certain factors may increase your risk, including age (most common after 60), obesity, a family history of ovarian or related cancers, genetic mutations like BRCA1/BRCA2, never having been pregnant, and conditions like endometriosis.
