Typically, we have found that Japanese knotweed is the more dominant plant. This is due to its new canes growing at a quicker rate to a higher maximum height and taking the light. However, Giant hogweed grows first producing large leaves which also take out the initial light from other plants. We feel that this can prevent the JK from migrating into that space as quickly as it would have done had the GH not been there. We don’t tend to see Giant hogweed growing in the middle of a dense Japanese knotweed stand with the Giant hogweed seed head rising above this. We do see this occurring a lot in areas of scrub and brambles though. Giant Hogweed definitely wins on the H&S front though due to the potential to cause harm to the public! #Gianthogweed #Japaneseknotweed
